contest: toronto festival of beers!

It’s that time of year again, the Toronto Festival of Beers is just around the corner.

This year, the Toronto Festival of Beers is celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, because well beer in Canada is amazing. There will be a #Canada150 pavilion with award winning beers, mashups and Canadian eats. I’m excited for this year’s event because there are a number of breweries on the list that I’ve never heard of, I love using festivals as a way to find out about new breweries and new beers that I might not be able to get in the city.

And this year, the Toronto Festival of Beer is expanding on their food offerings, with their #TasteTFOB Grilling Tent, featuring chefs from some of Toronto’s hottest restaurants.

And now for the real fun! I’m giving away two pairs of tickets for Sunday, July 30th. Enter below for your chance to bring your beer-loving-bestie to the biggest beer festival in the city!

galaxy photoz: uber for photographers

Looking for a photographer can be a daunting task. I’m constantly seeing people looking for recommendations on my Facebook for photographers for weddings, newborn photos and headshots and a new app is looking to make that search easier.

Galaxy Photoz is a platform where you can find professional photographers for future events or for last minute shoots. You choose where, when, and how much you want to pay and then let the app work for you, this means no searching for locations or calling around for prices.

Leanne FergusonIt will also allow photographers the opportunity to manage their capacity. With requests coming in on-demand, photographers can fill gaps in their schedule with last-minute requests.

Galaxy Photoz has launched a campaign on Indiegogo here. There’s lots of great products that you can buy to support them coming to market. Choose from, perks including drones, selfie sticks, photo shoots starting at $100 and more (if you’ve ever hired a photographer, you know that’s a great price). The app will be launching in June 2017 in Toronto with plans to expand worldwide!

brunchin’: emma’s country kitchen

I had heard so much about Emma’s Country Kitchen but never made it out there because I don’t usually have the patience for brunch, too many lines, and people with nowhere to stand but a couple of weeks ago we were up early on a rainy Saturday so I thought we’d try our luck. The wait was about 40 minutes, so we went and grabbed a coffee across the street, stopped in at the butcher and they called us in about the time they have estimated.

The first thing I noticed was the donuts, they have about 4 different flavours to choose from and our hostess told us that they sell out, they make them fresh everyday and when they’re gone, they’re gone. So, of course we had to start with a donut appetizer.

We got the one with toffee on top, I love sponge candy and this donut was so good. We shared one but I could have very easily just had multiple donuts for breakfast, it was so good.

For our main, we had just the classic breakfast. It was tasty but similar to what you’d have at any brunch place. I did see a lot of people getting their pancakes, they looked good but not what I was looking for.

I don’t know that I would wait in line for breakfast again but I would definitely pop in to grab donuts, it looked like you could pick them up at the counter. They were definitely worth it, particularly as the weather gets nicer and I spend more time walking in that neighbourhood.

Have you been to Emma’s Country Kitchen? What did you think?

be our guest: royalTEA party events

I might still be in the Beauty and the Beast mode but I definitely felt like a very important guest at today’s royaltea’s launch party.

Royaltea is a new mobile, luxury, high tea business that will bring high tea events to you. Events can be customized to a variety of budgets and themes, which would be perfect for showers, special birthdays and corporate events. Royaltea had a launch party this weekend to introduce their beautiful china and custom services.

This event had tiny sandwiches and little desserts and of course, tea. The attention to detail was remarkable, like the colourful, heart-shaped sugar. Your party can have any types of treats and sandwiches as well as a variety of tea (including some grown up tea). Contact Royaltea Party Events to book your custom tea party.

trying something new: cross-stitching

So, I tried something yesterday I didn’t really think I would ever do – I went cross-stitching. At a brewery. Of course, because where else would I cross stitch?

The was cross-stitching with Caitlin, a staff member of Left Field Brewery (which continues to be one of my favourite breweries in the city). For $35, you get a pint of beer and a kit filled with items to complete the cross-stitch you picked, also the instruction of a very patient teacher, Caitlin.

When I opened my box, I knew I was in trouble. It was so cute but I was immediately overwhelmed. But a brief tutorial and several dozen questions later, I was on my way. I was however glad that the instructions said that you would not finish your cross-stitch in that time but instead, you would be able to take it home and have everything you need to complete it. Caitlin has a bunch of different designs and kits which she sells on Etsy, depending on how this one turns out (I’ll try to post a picture when complete but don’t be surprised if it’s next winter), I might get the “Wish You Were Beer” one, because, it’s true.

They’re running the event a couple more times, I would suggest trying it out if you’re looking for something fun and crafty to do, although it definitely reminded me why I don’t do crafts!

Also, I’ll include a little Thirsty Thursday, my pint was a seasonal brew with blood orange and it was really good. Not overly sweet or too fruity, still tasted like beer. Make sure to try it out next time you’re in the east end.

dining out: town crier

Friday night, I joined some friends at a cozy pub on John St, which is one of my friend’s favourite spots. We grabbed apps and dinner and a couple of drinks. As an app, we shared the short ribs and calamari, which I was too excited to eat that I forgot to get a photo. The short ribs were really good, the calamari was not fried so if you prefer it grilled, I’d recommend it. I’m not usually a huge fan of short ribs but the sauce on these were really, really good. You can also get the short ribs on a flatbread, which my friend had and really enjoyed.

For dinner, I had the mussels on my friend’s recommendation. The Town Crier has a variety of mussel options, I went more traditional.

It’s very hard to see the light garlic sauce on the mussels, I pulled the mussels out and dumped the fries into the delicious buttery sauce. The mussels were very fresh and the fries were definitely hand cut. I really enjoyed my pub night out with the ladies, the pub was a buzz on a Friday night – a great way to get the weekend started. If you’re looking for traditional german pub food, check out the town crier on John!

fun new desserts

Hope you all had a great weekend. This weekend, I ate a lot… resolutions-smesolutions! So, I’ll be sharing lots of that over the next few posts!

I went to a fun place for dessert this week for someone’s birthday for shaved ice. The last time I had shaved ice, it was more like a snow cone, it was nothing like what I had this week. At Cups, near Yonge and Steeles, you can get shaved ice with a variety of toppings, I chose one that I couldn’t pronounce and I couldn’t be happier.

wp-1484520729573.jpg

This shaved ice was topped with mochi, condensed milk and soy powder and it was so good! It was also super messy but totally worth it. My friends tried other options included fruits and matcha, the fruits and toppings were overflowing, the one I got was a small, the larger sizes are definitely big enough for at least two people. If you’re looking for something that isn’t too sweet but super delicious, I would definitely recommend Cups.

must see: #hiddenfigures

I would say happy Sunday, but you probably don’t want a reminder that you’re going back to your first full week of work in a while. I stayed pretty busy this weekend (as usual) and had to share with you a movie that I absolutely loved.

If you have not heard of it, it is the story of 3 black women that worked at NASA during the 60s as “computers”. I was excited to see this movie, I had first heard about it because IBM is a big sponsor of the film and I work very closely with them in my “day job”. The movie stars Janelle Monae, Octavia Spencer and Taraji P. Henson and each of them were amazing. I don’t want to give away too much of the movie, but I want to tell everyone that it is definitely worth the $15 to see and I think that they should show it in every high school math class, I even joked with a teacher that I met this weekend that it should be in her next lesson plan. I’m very glad that it did extremely well at the box office. I was afraid that it wouldn’t garner a lot of interest, since it is about a topic that doesn’t get a lot of attention. So, if you’re looking for a great, funny and feel-good movie, definitely check out Hidden Figures. And, if you’ve already seen it, I’d love to know what you think!

detox to retox: left field brewery

We headed back to a fan favourite this weekend at Left Field Brewery. Every time I’m there, I’m reminded why I love this place. They’ve got the most adorable beer-themed Christmas tree in the lobby, and underneath, they are taking donations for a local shelter! So, next time you’re there – be sure to bring something for the box!

We had our class led by April, which is always lovely and relaxing. I may have been doing a lot of Child’s Pose, you know because you have to listen to your body – but my legs are still hurting me today so I have to assume I got a great workout.

Next, we were on the beer. The ladies of School House Booze now have their own pencils, which makes BINGO exciting on top of the intensity, people get really into BINGO!
