clean & clear

And under control? Are those commercials from forever ago? Probably…
I’ve been using Clean & Clear products on and off for a few years, usually the astringent for breakouts. I didn’t know that Clean & Clear had a “problem pores” solution. I’m pretty lucky that my skin is generally pretty good, which is great because I hate wearing and putting on make up. I get the occasional breakout but overall not too bad.

I received a cleanser, an astringent and a moisturizer. I’ve been using it for a couple of days and so far, so good. It’s tricky to tell so far if my pores are changing but I definitely like the system so far. I hate things that are overly complicated or have too many steps, this one is great because it spells it out for you. It’s a skincare routine I can definitely get into since it takes less than 5 minutes, and well particularly in the morning, time is precious. Actually, time at bed is precious too, I don’t want anything standing between me and my bed! I also like it because it’s not an expensive skincare routine, I can’t imagine paying $100 for stuff to put on my face. I’ll definitely keep using the skincare routine and look forward to seeing if it makes a difference with my skin.

Have you used Clean & Clear? What’s your skincare go-to?

my new favourite nail polish

I’ll be honest, I was a little disappointed with my most recent Color Show, I found it was very translucent so decided to try another brand for the summer. I originally saw the Gel Envy on I’m a Beauty Geek and thought it looked really pretty.

I’ve never tried gel nail polish before, but I’ve done shellac and it completely destroyed my nails – I was not looking for something similar to that. I liked the idea that it gave the gel effect without needing a light, because really it just seems like so much effort. So I bought the nail polish AND the top coat (I’m terrible and don’t often purchase the top coat). It also included the base coat in the nail polish, which is good because as you can guess, I never wear a base coat. Each bottle was $8.99, little more than I normally spend but not the highest end for sure. It also can occasionally be found on sale.

The nail polish went on really smoothly and looked good even after one coat but I still added the second one. About ten minutes later, I put the top coat on and it dried relatively quickly (that’s also usually a problem for me, messing up my nails before even getting off the couch).

I would say that it lasted about 3-4 days before I noticed any chipping and I had to take it off by day 5. I’ve read some people have better luck with it lasting longer but this is about as long as any other nail polish has lasted for me so I was pretty happy. It comes off fairly easily (for a dark colour) and I did love the shine.

Tell me, what’s your favourite drug store brand nail polish? I’m always looking for my next one.

ks beauty lounges in forest hill

Last Friday, I was invited to the grand opening of KS Beauty Lounge in Forest Hill. This beauty boutique focuses on eyes with lash and brow treatment as well as makeup applications.

When I walked in to the beautiful salon, I was greeted by the extremely friendly team. The salon was warm and inviting and beautifully decorated, it was as if you were entering someone’s home. The atmosphere was very relaxed, which I love in a salon, I find some places take themselves too seriously. I was offered my choice of treatment to try out the salon and decided to try eyelash extensions. I’ve never had my eyelashes done before so I wasn’t really sure what to expect. My lash artist Maryam was amazing. She walked me through all the paperwork, what to expect and made me feel really comfortable. I’d seen pictures of people getting lash extensions but didn’t really know what to expect. Once my eyes were closed, I probably could have fallen asleep, I couldn’t even tell that someone was touching my eyes. The hour it took flew by and I was quite happy with the results. It looks as if I’m wearing a lengthening mascara but not like I’m going out in Vegas. Maryam also went over how to care for the lashes and answered my bunch of questions following the treatment.

Following my extensions, the lovely Joseph did my make-up for me, it was Friday night after-all. I wanted to keep it fairly simple as I wasn’t planning on hitting the town. He suggested I try airbrush foundation, at first I was little hesitant, I don’t normally like wearing foundation, I find it really heavy on my face and really uncomfortable but the airbrush was more like wearing a BB cream. It created a very even skin tone and didn’t feel like I was wearing pounds of makeup.

i'm kind of bad at selfies but look at that length!

The KS Beauty Lounge offers a number of services related to the eyes, including extensions, eyelash and eyebrow tinting, as well as the new Micha glaze, which last two weeks and give the look of a traditional mascara. The team is extremely lovely and I recommend them if you’re looking for eye treatments.

broadway nails imPRESS press-on manicure

I received a sample of the imPRESS manicure from Influenster. I’ve never worn fake nails before so I was interested to see how these ones felt.

They sent me two colours, both a little bolder than something I’d normally wear but I decided to test out the orange.

wpid-2014-05-17-13.49.00.png.png
I first lined up the nails in order so I didn’t mix them up. My nails are all different sizes so I was afraid that it would be hard to find something that fit but for the most part, it wasn’t a probably. The peel-off part was a little difficult to take off, it look a little getting used to but once I got into the rhythm of it, it was pretty simple. The nails were more flexible than I expected, I expected them to be rigid. It took a little getting used to the fake nails, particularly with typing and they seemed a little too long for me I’m not used to having such over the top nails so I tested cutting them down. I was able to trim them down with nail clippers, some people may not mind the length, but I found them hard to work with. The problem is, I likely wouldn’t wear the ones with tips because I think they would be too long. I think the fact that they were a little flexible allowed me to shape them, if they had of been really rigid, I think they probably would have cracked. They took me about 10 minutes to put on and they of course had no dry time, which is always an issue for me, I’m usually not patient enough to sit and wait for my nails to dry and I mess them up.

Would I buy this product again? I think I would if I were going on vacation and wanted a long lasting product that didn’t chip, but I wouldn’t buy them for everyday wear. I’m going to Vegas in October and I think they would be great for that. They have a bunch of colours and patterns and are available at Walmart, Target and Loblaws, $8.99 for the colours and $10.99 for the patterns. They’re in the same price range as the nail polish stickers I usually wear on vacation. They also have a glitter line, which I would probably wear, for new years or some occasion because I hate how impossible glitter polish is to get off. They look even and are as irritating to remove. They lasted about 5 days, then I had to take them off but they probably would have lasted another day or two.

Have you tried these nails? What’s your go-to for an easy at-home mani?

spring gala: the bay fairview

I know I keep saying it but Spring is here (maybe it’s because winter lasted forever!) and that means gives us a great reason to update our make-up collections. Time to update to the newest trends like orange (I think I found a lipstick that doesn’t make me look like a pumpkin) or nudes for the bohemian chic look and the bay fairview’s spring gala is a great way to update your look. The event is Friday, April 25th – from 2pm-9pm and tickets are available for purchase until April 24th.

wpid-20140418_193107.jpg

For $10, you get a ticket to the party, $8 of which can be put towards a purchase and $2 goes to “Look Good, Feel Better” a charity helping women living with cancer. All the counters will be doing demos to help you update your look and try out colours you might not normally consider. There will also be food, drinks, manicures, hair styling, eyebrow shaping, henna, an engraver and a DJ between 2pm-9pm. Also, each counter will have a gift with purchase over $75. There will also be a draw every hour, on the hour for great prizes from the cosmetic department. So, if you want to get your spring beauty products but don’t really know where to start, this is a great opportunity to get your look ready for the warmer weather..

summer prep: body scrubs

Even though the weather has been all over the place lately, summer is actually coming. I promise (actually, I’m not even sure anymore, tomorrow is not looking so good). Assuming that summer is coming soon, that means there will be a lot more exposed skin, skirts, dressed, shorts, tanks are in our future, time to get that skin ready for that fresh air.

I love body scrubs, they just feel so great so I thought I’d share my thoughts on two popular brands – Golden Sugar from Bath and Body Works (Cashmere Glow) and The Body Shop’s Satsuma Body Polish. They’re both around the same price point, although both stores seem to have some sort of sale going on. The regular price for the Golden Sugar is $16 and the Body Polish is $20.

wpid-PhotoGrid_1393101017929.jpg

Although I expected these products to be similar, I was surprised in how different these products were. I found the Golden Sugar Scrub to be thicker and had more of a texture. It was really like large grains of sugar in the scrub. I found the Body Polish to be more of a soap texture. It wouldn’t be possible to wash with the Golden Sugar Scrub whereas I think it would be possible with the Body Polish.

Both of these scrubs have a nice scent. I love the vanilla aspects of the cashmere glow but I don’t think anything can beat The Body Shop’s satsuma, I think a lot of their success must be attributed to that scent. Both stores have a bunch of scents to choose from so you’re likely to find something you like.

I’m really excited about the weather getting nicer, and about all my summer products, scents and colours. Are there any products you love for the summer?

five must-haves in your clutch at a wedding

I went a wedding on Friday last week. There’s always a lot of prep for going to a wedding, making sure you don’t forget anything. So, I thought I’d share my must-haves for your night out.
1. Gum
This one may seem obvious but gum or mints is definitely a must for your night out. It is so easy to forget. Likely you left it in your other purse. It’s just so much easier if you remember to bring your own. Bonus: you help someone else out that forgot their gum, sharing is caring.

2. Mini-Perfume
Dancing up a storm might leave you feeling a little less than fresh. Chances are you have a drawer full of mini-perfumes from gift with purchases, handouts or some where even more random (seriously, where did these all come from?). You have them now so this is the best time to use them up. Trust me, you’ll thank me during the YMCA.

3. Toothpick/Floss
There will be a ton of pictures taken, some weddings even have their own hashtag (sounds ridiculous, but is actually a great idea). You don’t want to be all dressed up for the wedding, with your nails done, hair done, everything did and have a huge piece of spinach in your teeth. Take the floss picks with you and your pictures will thank you later.

4. Oil-Absorbing Sheets
As mentioned, there will be a ton of pictures. Everyone will have their phones out, professional photographers will be snapping pictures and there may even be a few disposible cameras around, last thing you’d want is to have a shiny forehead (spinach would be the last thing but you already took care of that). Keeping a few of these on hand will mean you can remove the oil without ruining your make-up.

5. Pantyliners
This one may be unexpected, as these pantyliners are not for what you think they are. I put them in my shoes. It makes me last in my heels a little bit longer. I stick these in the bottom of my shoes, they help absorb sweat, stop you from slipping forward in shoes and provide a little bit of cushion. Now, of course, beware that you are putting something sticky in your shoes, so keep in mind this may not be the solution for your red soles. I use them in cheaper/older heels, and I put them in all the time, so the sticky doesn’t bother me.

So, since we’re twenty-somethings (or at least most of us are), many of us may be getting married. I’ve partnered with Mo Money, Mo Houses to include a giveaway in this post. We’re giving away two gift certificates for Soulmates Dresses, a mother-of-the-bride online store. It may be for your mom, but she’ll love you for it. This giveaway is for all my readers, anywhere in the world, you have until November 19th. Best of luck!

nail polish i love

I just have to share this nail polish. Anytime I wear one of these three colours, I get so many compliments. I’m what I’d like to refer to as ‘thrifty’ because it sounds so much better than cheap so I hate paying lots of money for any beauty products. I bought these three polishes 3 for $8 about 6 weeks ago at Shoppers Drug Mart, I think the regular price is $4.99.

This nail polish goes on smoothly, only needs two coats. It dries pretty quickly, great for someone impatient like me. It typically last a couple of days without any chips, and I very rarely put top coat on, again because I’m very impatient.

I would say this is part of a girl’s survival guide in the city because it is a great polish at a great price, because not all of us can afford/have time for a shellac mani every couple of weeks.
