gentlemen’s expo 2016

My boyfriend and I headed to the Gentlemen’s Expo this past weekend because we had such a great time last year! I thought this year’s event was even better than last year, I thought there was a better mix of vendors and sessions and so had been looking forward to it for a few weeks. Here are my highlights:

Although, probably makes more sense to save this for a Thirsty Thursday, this was definitely my favourite drink of the show. Auchentoshan, a single malt scotch was served over ice with a bit of IPA and grapefruit juice, it was dangerously delicious.

I was also excited because my friend Bourbon Thing was presenting a Bourbon 101 session. If you don’t know Jamie, you’re really missing out. She hosts whiskey events in the city as well as has a blog and podcast dedicated to the drink.

There was also lots of non-booze related things, awesome socks, cute ties and fun cufflinks. There was even a place where you could try out virtual reality headsets, I lasted about 28 seconds on the VR roller coaster before I felt super dizzy, it was really cool but not for me. To be honest, I’m surprised I lasted that long.

So, there was lots to see and do at the show this weekend and I had a good time… until…..

RICK MERCER WAS THERE AND HE INTERVIEWED US AND I’M STILL BLUSHING!!!!!!!!!!

We knew he was at the show because we had seen it on instagram but despite our best efforts, we couldn’t find him. We were wrapping up our day, having a quick snack and we see his cameras and notice it’s him. And he just starts interviewing us, no intro or anything just starts talking. So, there’s a small chance we’ll be on the Mercer Report this week – it’s a pretty small chance because I was fan-girling so hard the tape may not even be usable.

So, it was an amazing year at the Gentlemen’s Expo, I’m already looking forward to next year!

detox to retox: indie ale house

This past Sunday, I got to do yoga in Indie Ale House, a place I normally only think about when I want delicious mac and cheese (the butternut squash one is my favourite). Indie Ale House also brews a number of delicious beers which we of course got to try after a morning yoga session!

If you’ve ever been to Indie Ale House, you’re probably used to just busy tables and would never expect a relaxing yoga class but that’s what we’ve got. And then we got to sample 5 beers from Indie Ale House, and it was even more fun because we got to choose our own 5th beer, which was a great way to try so many different beers!

I know that Indie Ale House sold out super quickly but the good news is, the next Detox to Retox is on sale! But grab tickets before they’re gone – we’re going back to a yogis-favourite and tickets are already half sold out! Join us in December at Left Field Brewery – see you next month!

dining out: wafels and more

I’m excited to share this new restaurant with you that I went to a cuuple of weeks ago on their opening weekend – Wafels and More in Kensington Market – a neighbourhood I’m not in often enough.

Wafels and More are authentic Belgium waffles, and they have so many types. They also offer sweet and savoury waffles so you could essentially have waffles for dinner and I think that’s amazing. As you walk up to Wafels and More, you can smell fresh waffles being made.

I had the “brussels” with strawberries and whipped cream and it was light and fluffy. It was delicious but I got a little jealous of my boyfriend, I think he made the better choice.

He got the Speculoos Bomb on a liege waffle. The liege waffle was smaller but sweeter and my favourite of the two waffles. And for those who don’t know, speculoos is a cookie from Europe – I had never heard of it and I was really missing out because his waffle had a speculoos butter on it. When I go back, I’ll definitely be getting that one! They also have smaller liege waffles that come with different options, which is better if you want to take them away with you.

Next time you’re in Kensington Market, be sure to stop by and get some authentic Belgium waffles!
